This is a question that has come up in our Payroll Essentials Training Course that is currently running.

Scenario:

An employee comes to work for 2 hours on a public holiday, then has to go home early due to being ill. This is what they would receive for the day

2 hrs at time and half

1 x alternative day IF the day is a otherwise working day for the employee

What happens to the rest of day?

Nothing. You cant get sick leave on a public holiday and you don’t get paid unworked public holiday on a day you work. The alternative day is the reward for working on the public holiday.

Have you got questions around payroll? Do you want to confidently manage and administer payroll through understanding the complexities of the Employment and Holiday Pay Act in relation to paying staff? Where do you go to get in-depth payroll rules and regulation training? The Small Business Training Hub, a division on Ontrack Bookkeeping Ltd, delivers this training course to business owners and payroll administrators. We would love for you join us.

Here’s what one of our past students had to say:

“The amount of in depth coverage of NZ payroll, all the ins and outs that anyone doing payroll in NZ needs to be aware of. Filled in a lot of gaps in my knowledge and I feel much more comfortable running payroll after doing this course.” Steph
